WASHINGTON—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) joined thirty-two other major pro-life, religious, and health care organizations on September 6 urging the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to pass the Conscience Protection Act of 2017 (H.R. 644/S. 301). Signatories include numerous medical groups representing tens of thousands of health care professionals who object to abortion and are seeking legal protection to serve their patients in good conscience. “Federal laws protecting conscientious objection to abortion have been approved for decades by Congresses and Presidents of both parties. Even many ‘pro-choice’ Americans realize that the logic ...

This issue of Ripple Effect features a look back at our PMI Board of Directors presidents (and one chairman) from the date of PMI’s re-birth in 1998. Each one left his/her own unique imprint on the organization. Some led from the front with innovative ideas and fanfare. Others moved quietly behind the scenes and affected changes in a more subtle but equally effective way. Much has been written about individuals like Abraham Lincoln , who history seems to have put in place to achieve a particular goal. The same can be said about our PMI board leadership, starting with Bill O’Keeffe (Symmons) who was the last to carry the title of “Chairman of the PMI ...

Healthcare has dominated much of the political and public debate in the last twelve months. Repeal, replace, subsidies, CSRs, who’s in and who’s out of the Marketplace, how many insurers are in a given county. With the introduction of the Graham-Cassidy bill last week, there is one more attempt to fundamentally change how healthcare is paid for and delivered. However, there is a critical part of the healthcare debate that is receiving little attention – and time is running out. For over 50 years, Federally Qualified Health Centers, or community health centers, have provided comprehensive, community based, medical, dental and behavioral health care to everyone, ...

KUSA - A strange pest has killed billions of dollars of trees in 30 states. Since 2013 with its detection in Boulder, Colorado’s trees are now on the hit list. If you have ash trees, they are at risk from a small insect called the Emerald Ash Borer. This pest brings another scenario like the pine beetle that came to the Colorado mountains and destroyed millions of pines several years ago. It’s a bug that’s hard to fight – and in this case, if you own ash trees, it’s not a matter of IF the bug arrives in your yard, but WHEN it shows up. Since ash trees are one of the most common trees in our state, we need to pay attention. The Emerald Ash Borer hopped over ...

In February, the California Court of Appeal (“Court”) ruled on the question of whether a real estate agent can bring a lawsuit against the owners of a property for a commission if not all of the owners signed the listing agreement, but one owner allegedly signed on behalf of all owners. Long story short, the Court ultimately decided that a real estate agent should have the ability to bring a suit to prove the owner signed on behalf of others. Bernice Jacobs (“Jacobs”) is a licensed California real estate broker who, in April 2013, entered in to a Vacant Land Listing Agreement (“Agreement”) for which she had the “exclusive and irrevocable right” to sell a parcel ...

If you follow our weekly emails or read our blog, you’ve noticed that PRO “recommends” certain candidates and ballot initiatives. Do you know the process behind these recommendations, why we are involved in political initiatives, and why they’re important to your profession? Every day the real estate industry is affected by policies set at the Federal, State and Local levels. Sometimes this is on purpose, like the passage of Dodd-Frank following the recession. Other times it is inadvertent, like the potentially devastating flood insurance issue that’s currently a hot topic. Either way it is important that there are elected officials who can stand up and be ...
